MW meets … David Koma

On our Party Hotlist; David Koma is the London-based fashion designer who has become synonymous with the ultra body contouring silhouette, creating sculptural statement dresses inspired by the feminine form. From rooftop drinks to painting the town, we will be dressing to the nines in David Koma 💃🏼

How would you describe the David Koma women?

Juxtapositions play an important role in the aesthetic of the brand, and David Koma Woman is a reflection of that. She is tough yet sensual, free yet controlled, youthful yet mature – a complex character reflective of the modern women. I imagine her as a 21st century femme fatale – strong and confident, with a sophisticated sex appeal.

Favourite fashion memory from your childhood?

At the age of 14, my mother gave me a book about important designers and the places where they studied. That’s when I found out about Central Saint Martins and decided I had to attend! I was heartbroken to find out I couldn’t go straight away and had to wait until I was eighteen. Discovering that book changed my whole life. Studying at Central Saint Martins was the best time of my life, with no exaggeration! I was doing what I love every day, I lived in such an exciting city, I had access to the most amazing library and I was lucky to be surrounded by very talented students from all the different courses. And of course I was taught by the legendary Professor Louise Wilson, OBE.

Who or what inspires your work?

My inspiration comes from people I meet every day and the conversations that we have. In the past year a lot of these communications have been digital – voice notes and WhatsApp texts that I treasure. In my mind I am constantly building an archive of inspiration. It is like a visual library I can enter to pick themes for the next project.

Favourite piece from your collection on MWHQ?

My favourite piece is the Crystal-Embellished Crepe Gown. It’s a classic silhouette with delicate crystal straps and trim, but it makes a statement with the tulle cut outs. Rosie Huntington-Whiteley was the first to wear it on the night she won Harper’s Bazaar Women of the Year Award. She looked fantastic and made the dress design even more memorable for me.

First thing your going to do post lockdown?

Travel! As soon as we are allowed to, I have a long list of places I must go. I have to visit Georgia, my birth country, where I am planning a very exciting project. I am dreaming of going back to Los Angeles too, I love the vibe of the city and truly relax there.  And of course St Petersburg – many of my friends live there and I haven’t seen any of them in over a year! And these are just the top 3.
